Autumn Flowers: The Season Most People Miss

Most people think of spring as the flower season. Autumn is just as extraordinary, and far less crowded. Here is what Britain grows from September to November.

Rich autumn arrangement with dahlias, rosehips, and seed heads in copper and burgundy tones

Autumn is the season that flower buyers consistently underrate. The attention goes to spring tulips and summer roses, and autumn gets treated as a gap to be filled with imports. This is a significant oversight. British autumn produces some of the most dramatic and beautiful flowers of the year: dahlias at their absolute peak, chrysanthemums in full flush, seed heads and berries adding texture, and the particular quality of autumn light that makes warm colours glow.

September: dahlias and the turning season

September is dahlia month. The vast dahlia family, with its hundreds of varieties from pompom to dinner-plate, reaches its peak in September and early October. The colour palette is perfectly suited to the season: deep burgundy, rich terracotta, burnt orange, soft lavender, and every possible shade of pink. A September dahlia arrangement needs nothing else.

🌸
Dahlias
Peak season August to October. An extraordinary range of flower forms and colours. Dinner-plate dahlias can be 30 cm across; pompom varieties are perfectly spherical. Vase life of 5 to 7 days.
🌼
Chrysanthemums
The autumn flower of Japan, and increasingly celebrated in the UK. Contemporary chrysanthemum varieties have shed the funeral association and gained a new, sophisticated aesthetic. Vase life of 2 to 4 weeks.

Rudbeckia (black-eyed Susan)
Warm golden-yellow daisies with dramatic dark centres. A sunflower relative with a more refined character. Excellent in autumnal mixed arrangements.

October and November: the late season

As dahlias fade with the first frosts, the focus shifts to chrysanthemums, seed heads, berries, and late-season roses. October is the month for rosehips: the hips of wild and garden roses add vivid scarlet and orange to arrangements. Seed heads, hypericum berries, and ornamental grasses come into their own as structural elements. These are the ingredients of an autumn palette that is genuinely different from anything summer produces.

Autumn flower buying guide

  • Buy dahlias in bud in September for maximum display: they open quickly in a warm room
  • Chrysanthemums bought in October will last 3 to 4 weeks with proper care
  • Rosehips, hypericum berries, and seed heads are available from hedgerows and farm shops
  • Autumn arrangements need less water than summer flowers: the cooler air reduces transpiration
  • Combine seasonal flowers with dried pampas grass and eucalyptus for a contemporary autumn display

A September dahlia arrangement in terracotta and burgundy is one of the most beautiful things you can put in a room. Do not wait for spring to think seriously about flowers.
